The Kano State Hisbah Commission has confirmed that its upcoming mass wedding will include Christians and Muslims alike. Commandant General, Dr. Aminu Daurawa, said the programme is open to all faiths, not one religion alone.
The “Auren Gata” or “marriage for the privileged” will cater to 1,500 couples, with the Kano State Government allocating N1.5 billion for the exercise.
Each groom will receive N100,000 as dowry, while each bride will get N100,000 as empowerment capital to start a business.
Eligible participants include widows, widowers, divorcees, spinsters, and bachelors. All applicants must undergo medical screening and counseling before approval.
Hisbah has begun screening, which covers tests for HIV, hepatitis, genotype compatibility, and drug use, to ensure participants are medically and socially ready for marriage.
Dr. Daurawa noted that three Christian couples took part in the previous mass wedding held in October 2023, and he stressed the new edition will maintain the same inclusive approach.
Officials say the mass wedding aims to strengthen family values, reduce social vices, promote social stability, and support vulnerable groups including orphans and low-income families under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration.
Deputy Commander Sheikh Mujahideen Aminuddeen said the initiative has sparked public discussion on responsible marriage and family values, and stakeholders have praised the inclusive model as a step toward unity across faith communities.
