The Kano State Government has postponed its planned mass wedding after medical screening revealed some brides were pregnant.
The screening, conducted in collaboration with the Kano State Hisbah Board, included pregnancy, HIV testing, and other essential medical exams.
Dr. Usman Bashir, executive chairman of the Kano State AIDS Control Agency, stated that the decision was made to protect the health of couples and their future children.
The government had allocated N1.5 billion for the mass wedding programme involving 1,500 couples. The screening process identified some health issues, including pregnancy, HIV, and hepatitis, prompting the postponement. The state government has reopened registration for individuals who weren’t shortlisted, urging them to submit fresh applications for the rescheduled exercise.
Kano State has made pre-marital health screening mandatory, with violators facing up to 5 years in jail or a N500,000 fine. The law aims to reduce health issues in children and promote healthy marriages.
