At least 30 villages in Danchadi District, Bodinga Local Government Area, Sokoto State, have been deserted following a brutal attack by bandits. The attackers, who struck on Wednesday and Thursday, killed six people, including the village’s Chief Imam, Malam Bashar Kyaluje, and rustled over 1,000 livestock, including cattle and camels.
The attacks, which began at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, saw gunmen storming Kyaluje and Dibarke villages, looting homes until midnight. The victims also include two others, and hundreds of displaced residents are now sheltering in schools and relatives’ homes in Danchadi, Bodinga, and Sifawa.
According to District Head Alhaji Lirwanu Mafaran Kuwarun Sarkin Musulmi, the attacks have left the villages deserted, with residents fearing for their lives. Despite the absence of new security deployments, some villagers have begun returning, raising concerns of fresh attacks.
The district head has appealed for urgent government intervention, but police and local authorities have yet to comment on the situation. The attack has sparked outrage and protests in Sokoto, with residents demanding increased security measures to protect communities.
The latest violence underscores the persistent security challenges facing parts of Sokoto State and the wider North-West, where communities continue to grapple with recurring incidents of banditry, kidnapping, killings, and displacement.
The Sokoto State Police Command has announced the neutralisation of a suspected armed bandit and the recovery of an AK-47 rifle with live ammunition following a foiled attack on Daraye Village in the Wamako Local Government Area ³.
The government and security agencies have promised to address the insecurity issue, but residents remain wary, calling for more decisive action to protect communities.
