The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State is experiencing a leadership crisis, with tensions rising between Chairman Hussain Isah Mai Riga and former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who recently joined the party. The dispute has led to allegations of power grab and exclusion, with some party members accusing Kwankwaso of trying to hijack the party structure.
The crisis began when Kwankwaso, a prominent politician and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, joined the NDC, sparking concerns among existing party members. Mai Riga, who had been leading the party, resisted attempts to unseat him, insisting that his mandate was legitimate.
The national leadership of the NDC intervened, convening a meeting led by Senator Seriake Henry Dickson to resolve the dispute. After deliberations, the party reaffirmed Mai Riga as the substantive chairman, with Kwankwaso being allocated 60% of the party’s leadership structure.
Mai Riga expressed gratitude to the party leadership and Kano residents for their support, apologizing to anyone he may have offended during the crisis. The resolution is seen as a strategic move to strengthen internal unity and position the party for the 2027 general elections.
The NDC’s national leadership has emphasized the importance of internal democracy and transparent candidate selection processes. The party has urged members to disregard any unofficial lists of candidates circulating in the public domain.
