Renowned broadcaster and human rights activist, Ahmad Isa, popularly called Ordinary President, has filed a defamation suit against a Kaduna-based young woman, Maryam Adam, over comments she made in a viral video.
The case stems from a video Maryam posted following the killing of Malama Ummulkhairi in Kaduna. The victim was allegedly lynched over accusations of child abduction.
In the footage that spread widely on social media, Maryam used strong language against Ordinary President, calling him an “animal” and a “mad person,” among other insults.
Ahmad Isa said the remarks were defamatory and were intended to injure his reputation as a public figure and advocate for justice and human rights.
According to him, the words used in the video had the potential to bring his name, organization, and years of advocacy work into disrepute.
The broadcaster has therefore approached a Kaduna court, asking it to compel Maryam to appear and answer to the allegations contained in her video.
Legal observers say the suit highlights the growing concern over online speech and the need for accountability when making public accusations, especially on sensitive issues.
The court is expected to hear the matter in the coming weeks. Both parties have been notified, as the case adds to ongoing debates about freedom of expression versus protection of reputation in Nigeria.
