A 65-year-old traditional ruler in Nasarawa State, Dan Majin Lafia, has drawn nationwide attention after marrying 19-year-old Kainuwan Adudu in a wedding ceremony held over the weekend in Lafia.
Photos from the event quickly circulated online, showing the monarch and his bride in regal attire, smiling and exchanging greetings with guests. The images were shared across Facebook, X and WhatsApp groups, where they were reposted with comments about the union and the scale of the celebration.
The most discussed aspect has been the 46-year age gap between the couple. Many social media users questioned the marriage, while others defended it as a personal and cultural decision. The debate has trended under discussions about marriage, tradition and age in northern Nigeria.
Among the early public reactions, Facebook user Bin Ismail offered congratulations. “Love is beautiful! Congratulations to the bride and groom. May Allah grant you a peaceful home and bless you with righteous children,” he wrote. Other commenters echoed prayers for the couple, while some raised concerns about the bride’s age and the dynamics of the union.
In many Hausa and Fulani traditional settings, marriages involving title holders and much younger spouses are not uncommon, and are often framed around family arrangement, status and continuity of lineage. Traditional rulers in Nasarawa also play custodial roles in community affairs, which tends to draw added public scrutiny to their personal lives.
Dan Majin Lafia holds a recognized traditional title in the Lafia Emirate. Palace officials have not released a formal statement beyond confirming that the ceremony took place. Family representatives present at the wedding described it as a private union conducted according to Islamic rites.
The online conversation has since broadened beyond the couple. Some posts focused on consent and agency, others on cultural autonomy, and several urged that the discussion remain respectful. Human rights advocates and cultural commentators in the state have also weighed in, noting the tension between customary practice and evolving public expectations.
