Politics in Kano has taken a fresh twist following reports that two prominent loyalists of Dr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso are considering dumping the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NDC, and returning to the All Progressives Congress, APC. The development has sparked intense discussions within political circles in the state.
The NDC has publicly appealed to the Senator representing Kano Central, Rufai Sani Hanga, and former Kano Governor, Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, to reconsider the reported plan to rejoin the APC. Party leaders described the move as a potential setback for the opposition in Kano.
In a statement issued on Monday, NDC officials said the defection of key figures like Hanga and Gaya could weaken the party’s structure and influence ahead of the 2027 general elections. They argued that both men played critical roles in mobilizing support for the party during the last election cycle.
Senator Hanga, who was elected on the NDC platform, and Alhaji Gaya, a former two-term governor and senator, were both once strong associates of Dr. Kwankwaso. Their reported plan to reunite with the APC is seen by many as a realignment of forces within Kano politics.
