President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that he will not concede defeat to those seeking to unseat him in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja, the president said politics is a contest and he is prepared to fight it out to the very end.
Tinubu made the statement while receiving members of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria at the Presidential Villa. The meeting focused on national issues, but the president used the opportunity to send a clear political message ahead of the next election cycle.
“Anyone who wants to take power from me should go ahead and try,” Tinubu said. “But I won’t lay out the red carpet for them. We will contest it right down to the final line. That is the fairness of politics.”
The president’s remarks come as political parties begin early positioning for 2027. The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has already signaled it will deploy its full strength to retain power. APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, said over the weekend that the party would not leave anything to chance.
Tinubu emphasized that every Nigerian has the right to aspire to leadership. However, he insisted that democracy requires competition, and he intends to meet any challenge head-on rather than step aside.
The meeting with the Catholic bishops also touched on issues of governance, insecurity, and the economy. The bishops have been vocal in recent months about hardship in the country, and their visit was seen as part of ongoing dialogue between the presidency and religious leaders.
This is not the first time Tinubu has spoken tough about 2027. Since assuming office in 2023, he has repeatedly said his administration needs more time to implement reforms and deliver results. Opposition parties have meanwhile been holding talks about possible coalitions to challenge the APC.
With just under two years to the next presidential election, political tension is already rising. Tinubu’s latest comments set the tone for what is likely to be a fiercely contested race, as both the ruling party and the opposition prepare for a major showdown in 2027.
