Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has ordered the immediate suspension and sacking of all village and ward heads in Mallam-Fatori, headquarters of Abadam Local Government Area, over their absence during his working visit to the border community on Monday.
The governor gave the directive while inspecting public infrastructure for residents returning to the insurgency-ravaged town, describing the traditional leaders’ absence as unacceptable at a time when displaced persons are returning and rebuilding their homes.
Zulum said traditional leaders have a critical role in stabilising communities emerging from conflict, and their presence is essential for maintaining communication between government and residents, strengthening resilience, and providing leadership as returnees settle back into their ancestral homes.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dauda Iliya, the governor directed the Commissioner for Local Government and Emirate Affairs, Alhaji Sugun Mai Mele, to work with the Shehu of Borno to immediately commence the process of appointing new village and ward heads.
Zulum stressed that the replacements must be people of proven integrity, competence and commitment, capable of working hand-in-hand with residents, government and security agencies to restore stability and development.
Beyond the leadership overhaul, the governor pledged to accelerate the reconstruction of critical infrastructure in Mallam-Fatori.
He directed the immediate construction of an Islamiyya school, primary and secondary schools, and a hospital to restore basic services for the returning population.
During the tour, Zulum inspected schools, government buildings and residential facilities that were damaged or abandoned during years of insurgency, noting that the provision of basic amenities is critical to enable returnees to rebuild their lives and livelihoods.
The governor also visited the 68 Battalion Nigerian Army headquarters in Mallam-Fatori, where he commended troops for their courage and commitment to maintaining security and supporting civilian resettlement.
He assured the military of continued state government support to enhance operational effectiveness as the administration pushes to restore normal life to the war-ravaged border community.
