A female police inspector, Mercy Bassey, has died after she was reportedly knocked down by a hit-and-run driver while on route-lining duty ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s arrival in Lagos on Tuesday.
Bassey, attached to the Ikotun Divisional Police Station, was hit by a black Highlander SUV while crossing the Third Mainland Bridge at Adekunle Intersection, inward Lagos Island, at about 2:30 pm, according to a security source.
The source said the registration number and driver identity were unknown as the vehicle sped off after the incident. Patrolmen on duty chased the SUV but it escaped to an unknown destination.
She was rushed to the General Hospital, Ebute Metta, but died while awaiting treatment. Her corpse will be moved to a morgue in Yaba for preservation.
Lagos Police spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident but declined further comment, while police said efforts were on to obtain CCTV footage to identify the vehicle. The incident occurred amid heightened security for the President’s return from France on Tuesday evening.
