A fearless Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, El-Masjid Abdul Umar, has reminded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of his own campaign promise on electricity, saying the President has disqualified himself from a second term.
The cleric, in a statement dated October 17, 2026, said President Tinubu himself set the standard for his own assessment when he told Nigerians during campaign, “If I don’t give you electricity in four years, don’t vote for me.”
He said the statement was not made by the opposition, but was a promise and a condition given by Tinubu himself, and Nigerians must now hold him to his own words.
According to him, Nigerians are still in total darkness, as the national grid has collapsed multiple times under this administration, more than ever before in the country’s history.
He said businesses have folded up because they cannot afford diesel, households cannot sleep with light, and Nigerians are now paying more for Band A darkness than they ever paid for light.
The cleric noted that what Nigerians have been given is not electricity, but an unbearable hike in tariff without power to justify it.
He argued that a man who fails his own test has no moral ground to ask for another chance, saying if the President said he should not be voted for if he fails, then he has already disqualified himself.
He added that Nigeria cannot afford another four years of darkness, excuses, and economic pain, stressing that the same lips that made the promise have failed to fulfill it.
He concluded that in 2027, Nigerians must honor Tinubu’s own words by voting him out, saying, “He asked to be voted out if he fails, and he has failed.”
