Prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take firm diplomatic action against former U.S. President Donald Trump over his recent threat of military action against Nigeria.
In a post shared on his verified Facebook page on Sunday, Gumi described Trump’s statement as a direct affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty and urged the government to respond immediately.
“For Trump to threaten a sovereign country with military attack is a profound disrespect to our authority, but we can rise above it,” he wrote.
The cleric advised President Tinubu to summon the U.S. ambassador and demand an official withdrawal of the threat. According to him, Nigeria should consider cutting off diplomatic relations with Washington if such a retraction is not made.
“President Tinubu should summon the US ambassador; they either retract their threats or we sever diplomatic ties with this irresponsible regime,” he said.
Gumi also encouraged the government to seek new opportunities for economic and military cooperation beyond the United States.
“There are lots of other options for our economic expansion and military alliance,” he added.
The cleric’s remarks come amid growing reactions to Trump’s comments, which many observers view as an undue interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs. Gumi’s call reflects a rising sentiment among Nigerians who believe the country must assert its independence and protect its sovereignty in global relations
