Hajiya Sutura Shehu Shagari, the last surviving wife of Nigeria’s former President Shehu Shagari, has passed away at the age of 89. She died on Monday, November 10, 2025, around 3 pm after a prolonged illness. Hajiya Sutura was a devoted mother, grandmother, and matriarch known for her humility, grace, and quiet strength.
Her husband, Shehu Shagari, served as Nigeria’s first democratically elected executive president from 1979 to 1983. He prioritized housing, education, agriculture, and industrialization through the “Green Revolution” policy. Shehu Shagari passed away on December 28, 2018, at the age of 93.
