Vice President Kashim Shettima has appealed to the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria to grant a two-week grace period to intervene on behalf of Niger State Governor Umaru Bago, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, and Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, who were blacklisted for alleged press freedom violations.
The three officials were added to IPI Nigeria’s “Book of Infamy” for suppressing press freedom and obstructing journalists’ work. Governor Bago was listed for shutting down Badeggi 90.1 FM, while Governor Eno was cited for expelling Channels Television journalists from the Government House. The IGP was accused of systemic media repression .
Shettima, who chaired IPI Nigeria’s Annual General Meeting, promised to speak with the officials, describing Governor Eno as “a pastor and a humble man” and Governor Bago as a friend. He also vowed to address the IGP’s actions, calling him “a man in the eye of the storm.
