Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has declared that he has permanently stepped away from partisan politics, insisting that his commitment is now centred on Nigeria’s development and the welfare of its citizens.
Obasanjo made the declaration while receiving the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, including the party’s governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, and his daughter, Iyabo Obasanjo, who is contesting for the Ogun Central Senatorial District seat, at his Abeokuta residence.
The elder statesman said although he no longer participates in party politics, he remains deeply concerned about the country’s future and will continue to support initiatives capable of improving the lives of Nigerians.
He expressed disappointment that Nigeria has failed to fully harness its enormous human and natural resources, stressing that the country’s persistent challenges stem largely from poor management rather than a lack of potential.
Obasanjo urged Adebutu to approach his governorship ambition with humility and a genuine desire to serve the people, emphasising that public office should never be pursued merely for personal gain or political prestige.
According to him, true leadership is measured by service, accountability and the ability to improve the lives of citizens.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Government has dismissed reports alleging that members of the State Executive Council routinely prostrate before Governor Dapo Abiodun whenever he is displeased with them.
The government described the claim as false and deliberately fabricated to ridicule the governor and mislead the public.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the state insisted that no commissioner or government official had ever been compelled to prostrate before the governor.
The government explained that an earlier incident involving some local government chairmen, who voluntarily prostrated while appealing on behalf of a colleague, was rooted in Yoruba cultural tradition and was neither demanded nor encouraged by Governor Abiodun.
It accused the publisher of the report of abandoning professional journalism by circulating sensational claims without verification.
