The Kano State High Court, sitting as the Court of Appeal, has directed lawyers representing Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasir Kabara to present the books he relied on as evidence during his original trial. Sheikh Abduljabbar is appealing the death sentence handed down to him by the Upper Sharia Court at Kofar Kudu for blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
During the hearing, Abduljabbar’s legal team urged the court to set aside the judgment of the lower court and discharge him of the allegations. Counsel to the Kano State Government, however, asked the court to uphold the conviction and sentence delivered by the trial court.
Presiding over the matter, Justice Nasir Saminu directed Abduljabbar’s lawyers to produce the books used to support their arguments during the initial trial, to enable the appellate court to continue its review of the case.
The court stated that a date for judgment on the appeal will be communicated later. The appeal is part of Sheikh Abduljabbar’s efforts to challenge the death sentence.
Sheikh Abduljabbar was convicted of blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in 2020, sparking widespread debate and controversy.
The Kano State Government has maintained that the trial was fair and the sentence was in accordance with Sharia law.
The case has attracted significant attention and concern from human rights groups and legal experts, who have questioned the fairness of the trial and the application of Sharia law in Kano State.
