Former, deputy Governor Muktari Shagari has assumed duty, promising to tighten safety rules, boost dredging and upgrade jetties—all under President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” push.
Shagari officially stepped into the role of Board Chairman of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) earlier this month. He was received by Gerei most senior officer at NIWA’s headquarters in Lokoja and immediately flagged the agency’s biggest hurdles – funding shortfalls, overlapping mandates with other bodies, and crumbling infrastructure along the country’s 3,000 km of navigable waterways. In his first remarks, Shagari promised to tighten safety enforcement, fast‑track dredging and jetty upgrades, and improve staff welfare.
