Amnesty International has raised concerns over alleged arrests, detention, threats and intimidation of critics of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The rights organisation said on Thursday that opposition politicians, their supporters and young people who express critical views online were among those allegedly affected.
According to Amnesty, the reported actions have created what it described as a “toxic climate of fear” in Kano State and raised concerns over freedom of expression.
The organisation said people should be able to express their views without facing arbitrary arrest or intimidation, stressing the need to protect fundamental rights.
Amnesty’s concerns come amid broader reports of arrests and detention of people critical of authorities in Nigeria, including previous cases involving journalists and online commentators in Kano.
