The Nigeria Police Force has taken over a facility of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State as investigations continue into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners who reportedly died while in custody.
The development follows the suspension of NSCDC personnel linked to the incident, amid growing concerns over the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Authorities are expected to establish what happened to the detainees and determine whether any individuals or institutional failures were responsible.
The takeover comes as tensions remain high in Minna, the Niger State capital, where authorities have imposed a 24-hour curfew following protests over the deaths. Security personnel have been deployed as efforts continue to maintain order while the investigation proceeds.
The police investigation is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the arrest and detention of the suspected miners, as well as events leading to their deaths. The identities of those responsible, if any wrongdoing is established, will be determined through the ongoing inquiry.
Authorities have not yet released a detailed account of the findings, while the investigation remains ongoing. The development comes after President Bola Tinubu ordered a transparent investigation into the deaths, stressing the need to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
