Kano’s politics is a full‑blown drama right now.
Governor Abba Yusuf is rumored to be planning a switch from the NNPP to the APC, a move that’s splitting the NNPP into pro‑defection and pro‑Kwankwaso camps and sparking fierce accusations of betrayal.
At the same time, the NNPP’s state chairman has been suspended, and the party’s only senator, Rufai Hanga, is warning that defecting would betray the masses who voted them in¹.
The APC isn’t immune either—there’s a separate power tussle over the state chairmanship, with Dr Abdullahi Ganduje trying to keep his ally in office, which has further inflamed tensions ahead of the 2027 elections .
All of this is happening against the backdrop of the lingering emirate crisis, where the governor’s move to reinstate Emir Sanusi II has added another layer of political flashpoints. As at the time of filling this reports, Kwankwasiyya movement has been working under RMK triggered tension in Kano.
