The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Gov. Siminalayi Fubara.
The move was initiated during plenary on Thursday, with lawmakers accusing the governor and his deputy of gross misconduct.
The Speaker of the House, Mr Martin Amaewhule, presided over the session.
The development comes amid renewed political tension between Fubara and his predecessor, Mr Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
On Dec. 5, 2025, a group of Rivers State lawmakers led by Amaewhule announced their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Days later, Fubara also defected from the PDP to the APC.
Despite the defections, political disagreements and exchanges between Wike and Fubara have persisted, culminating in the declaration of emergency rule in the state in March 2025.
Most members of the Rivers State House of Assembly are said to have remained loyal to Wike.
