In a recent video shared on Facebook on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, Niger Delta activist and Kalabari chieftain Asari Dokubo spoke on issues of religious coexistence and tolerance across Nigeria, drawing attention to what he described as uneven narratives surrounding faith and public space.
According to Dokubo, “How many mosques exist in non-Muslim areas, yet in Sokoto you will find a very big church”, a statement he used to illustrate his argument that Muslims in Nigeria have often accommodated religious diversity more than they are credited for. He maintained that places traditionally regarded as Muslim-majority have long hosted churches and Christian communities without resistance.
Dokubo explained that his remarks were not intended to provoke division but to counter what he sees as selective outrage in discussions about religion. He argued that conversations about marginalization must be grounded in facts and mutual respect rather than emotion or political sentiment.
The former militant leader further noted that Nigeria’s history is filled with examples of peaceful coexistence, especially in northern states where Christian worship centers operate openly. According to him, acknowledging this reality is necessary to reduce suspicion and rebuild trust between religious communities.
He also cautioned that exaggerating claims of exclusion or domination could inflame tensions at a time when the country is already grappling with insecurity and economic hardship. Dokubo stressed that religion should not be weaponized for political advantage or used to justify hostility.
In his view, national unity can only be sustained if Nigerians are willing to recognize each other’s rights and freedoms, regardless of faith. He urged religious leaders and political actors to tone down rhetoric that could deepen divisions.
Dokubo further stated that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity, and that protecting freedom of worship for all citizens remains essential to preserving peace, stability, and mutual coexistence across the country. View_More…
