Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), with Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin welcoming him to the party. Governor Yusuf, who resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) on January 23, 2026, made the move citing governance realities, national cohesion, and development as reasons for rejoining the APC .
Senator Barau, in a statement, expressed his commitment to working with Governor Yusuf to address Kano State’s challenges, emphasizing his dedication to serving the people of Kano and Nigeria. The governor’s defection has led to a mass realignment, with 22 state lawmakers, eight federal legislators, 44 local government chairmen, and several political appointees joining the APC.
However, Governor Yusuf’s deputy, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has remained loyal to the NNPP and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, sparking speculation about his political future. Analysts suggest Gwarzo may face impeachment proceedings if he refuses to resign.
The development has reshuffled Kano’s political landscape, with some APC stakeholders warning that denying Senator Barau the governorship ticket in 2027 could lead to an alliance with Kwankwasiyya.
