The Federal Government has filed a three-count charge against former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, for allegedly intercepting the phone communications of National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
The charges, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, accuse El-Rufai of unlawfully intercepting Ribadu’s phone communications, knowing individuals involved in the act without reporting them, and compromising public safety and national security.
The allegations stem from an interview El-Rufai gave on Arise TV’s Prime Time programme on February 13, 2026, where he admitted to intercepting Ribadu’s phone communications.
The prosecution claims El-Rufai’s actions contravene Section 12(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024, and Section 131(2) of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.
El-Rufai has presented himself at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for questioning over separate allegations, amidst tense demonstrations by opposing groups outside the EFCC complex .
