The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has accused the Federal Government of favoring energy cartels with a proposed N2-3 trillion power subsidy, describing it as a “clandestine move to settle the boys” ahead of the 2027 elections.
The NLC argues that this subsidy is unjustified, given the poor state of the power sector, and instead calls for a National Stakeholders’ Summit to overhaul the sector.
The proposed subsidy is part of the Federal Government’s plan to spread electricity subsidy payments across federal, state, and local governments from 2026.
However, power generation companies (GenCos) dispute the existence of a subsidy, claiming it’s a flawed narrative unsupported by budgetary or legal evidence.
The NLC also criticizes the privatization of the power sector, labeling it a “grand deception” that has plunged Nigerians into deeper energy poverty.
They demand a reversal of the privatization model, service-reflective tariffs, and public investment in generation and transmission infrastructure.
