The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned that 11 northern states, including Kano and Sokoto, are at high risk of a meningitis outbreak due to the dry season.
The agency listed the affected states as Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, and Borno.
Meningitis affects the brain and spinal cord, spreading through respiratory droplets, especially in crowded areas.
Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, neck pain, and vomiting. NiMet advises residents to report symptoms early and take precautions.
Nigeria has experienced meningitis outbreaks in the past, particularly in the north.
Vulnerable groups include children, young adults, and those with weakened immunity.
