Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is set to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday, leading a wave of supporters from Kano State.
This move is expected to significantly boost the ADC’s chances in the 2027 general elections, given Kwankwaso’s influence in Kano and northern Nigeria.
The defection comes after weeks of intense consultations between Kwankwaso, leaders of the Kwankwasiyya movement, and top ADC figures.
The move is seen as a strategic realignment ahead of the 2027 elections, with the ADC positioning itself as a strong alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Kwankwaso’s decision to join the ADC is reportedly driven by a desire to build a united opposition front against the APC.
The former governor has been meeting with key opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Seyi Makinde, as part of efforts to forge a broader political coalition.
The ADC has welcomed Kwankwaso’s move, with National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi stating that it would strengthen the party’s presence in northern Nigeria. The party is expected to announce Kwankwaso’s role in the upcoming elections soon.
