A Kaduna State High Court is set to rule on the bail application of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai today, April 14, 2026. El-Rufai has been in custody since February 19, facing allegations of financial misappropriation and money laundering.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) filed an amended nine-count charge against El-Rufai, accusing him of abuse of office, fraud, and corruption. The charges include inducing the Kaduna State Government to confer an N11 billion benefit on a firm for a non-existent light rail project and disposing of over $1 million linked to a World Bank loan.
El-Rufai’s counsel, Ukpon Akpan, urged the court to grant bail, citing his client’s constitutional rights and willingness to comply with conditions. The prosecution opposed the request, arguing the charges are serious and could hinder ongoing investigations.
The court had adjourned the hearing to today for ruling on the bail application. If granted, El-Rufai will be released from ICPC custody.
El-Rufai was temporarily released on March 28 to attend his mother’s burial. The ICPC had initially arraigned him alongside a businessman, Amadu Sule, but later dropped Sule’s charges.
The case has drawn significant public attention, given El-Rufai’s prominence in Nigerian politics. The Sultan of Sokoto has urged authorities to either charge El-Rufai or release him, citing concerns over due process.
