The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Nasarawa State Council, has suspended one of its members, Mr. Augustine Kuza of The Nigerian Pilot Newspaper for six months over disloyalty and campaigning against the chapel’s endorsed candidate in the 2026 NUJ Triennial Congress election.
The decision was reached at an Emergency Congress Meeting of the chapel held on 21 July 2026 in Lafia to review the conduct and outcome of the state council election.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting, members expressed disappointment over reports that Mr. Kuza led a delegation with a candidate from another chapel to visit members of the Correspondents’ Chapel, including Mr. Igbawase Ukumba and Mr. Cheke Emmanuel, to solicit support for a candidate other than Mr. Sunday John, who was officially presented by the chapel.
Congress noted that apart from leading the campaign team, Mr. Kuza also allegedly approached other members to vote against the chapel’s endorsed candidate. Members described the action as “an act of disloyalty and sabotage against the collective interest and unity of the chapel,” and said it was consistent with previous conduct that had brought embarrassment to the chapel.
The chapel clarified that it did not compel any member to vote for its endorsed candidate, but only appealed to members to do so. It stressed that the sanction was not because Mr. Kuza voted differently, but because of his alleged campaign against the chapel’s collective decision.
“After exhaustive deliberations, Congress unanimously resolved to suspend Mr. Augustine Kuza from the Correspondents’ Chapel for a period of six (6) months without benefits, effective from 21 July 2026 to 21 January 2027.
“During the period of suspension, he is to be removed from the two WhatsApp platforms of the chapel. His reinstatement shall be subject to approval by Congress upon satisfactory evidence of good conduct, decorum, and adherence to the ethics and values of the journalism profession.”
