Nigeria has recorded a fresh case of COVID-19, with health authorities confirming the infection in Cross River State.
The development was announced on April 21, 2026, marking one of the first reported cases in recent years after a significant decline in infections across the country.
According to the state Commissioner for Health, the confirmed case involves a 53-year-old Chinese national working in the state, who arrived in Nigeria in March and later developed symptoms before testing positive.
The patient was reportedly treated at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, where the infection was confirmed, prompting authorities to activate emergency response measures, including contact tracing and monitoring of possible exposures.
Officials have, however, reassured residents that the situation is under control and urged the public to remain calm while adhering to basic preventive measures.
The new case has raised concerns about a possible re-emergence of the virus in Nigeria, years after the peak of the global pandemic.
Health experts say continued vigilance, surveillance, and public health readiness remain critical to preventing any potential spread.
