The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST), Wudil branch, has rejected the newly introduced governing documents by the university administration, citing illegality and detrimental effects on the institution’s development.
The union alleges that the documents were approved without proper consultation with stakeholders and violate relevant legal provisions and labor conventions. ASUU also questions the legitimacy of the Governing Council that approved the documents, claiming it wasn’t properly constituted according to the KUST Amendment Law 2017.
The union has directed its members to refrain from recognizing or using the documents pending resolution of the dispute. ASUU has also sought approval from its National Executive Council to commence active non-compliance.
The crisis at KUST Wudil is not new, as the union has previously protested issues like inadequate funding, poor staff welfare, and lack of university autonomy. In 2025, ASUU-KUST held a peaceful protest demanding improved university funding and better staff welfare ².
The university administration has responded, describing ASUU’s allegations as spurious and unfounded, aimed at misinforming the public about the university’s progress. The administration claims to have implemented various developmental projects and reforms to enhance academic standards and staff welfare ³.
The Kano State Government has been urged to intervene and resolve the crisis. ASUU has acknowledged the government’s efforts to improve staff welfare and advance higher education in the state but expressed concerns over harmful provisions in the reviewed documents.
The union’s rejection of the governing documents has raised concerns about potential disruptions to academic activities. With ASUU’s stance, the situation at KUST Wudil remains uncertain.
