Former ADC Deputy Chairman, Nafiu Bala Gombe, is facing a tough time after losing the support of his sponsors, reportedly affiliated with the APC. The sponsors allegedly withdrew their backing due to Gombe’s failure to meet certain conditions, including weakening the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC). ¹
Gombe’s accommodation at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja was also not renewed, leading to his eviction. Sources indicate that his reputation has plummeted among key APC stakeholders who previously supported him.
The ADC Youth Network in Gombe State has given Gombe a 48-hour ultimatum to reverse his statements and accept his alleged resignation from the party. The group accuses Gombe of being used by external actors to destabilize the ADC ahead of the 2027 elections.
Gombe had previously claimed that his sponsors were not members of the APC, but rather public-spirited individuals and Nigerians averse to the alleged injustice being meted out to him.
The ADC leadership had accused Gombe of being sponsored by the APC to play a spoiler role, paving the way for President Bola Tinubu to emerge as a single presidential candidate in 2027.
Gombe’s troubles stem from his declaration of himself as the party’s chairman without full support, leading to a leadership crisis within the ADC.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had withdrawn recognition of both Gombe’s and David Mark’s factions of the ADC, citing a Court of Appeal order.
Gombe, a Gombe-born politician, had contested the 2023 governorship election in Gombe State under the ADC platform but lost to Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of the APC.
He had also served as national secretary of the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) and later joined the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) before moving to the ADC.
Gombe’s current situation has sparked reactions, with some calling for him to apologize to ADC leaders and expose his sponsors.
The ADC Youth Network has distanced itself from Gombe’s actions, stating that he no longer represents the party or Gombe State.
Gombe’s popularity in the North, particularly among ADC supporters, has been a concern for his sponsors, who allegedly expected him to weaken the party.
