President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new Police Academy campus in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, with a ₦15 billion take-off grant. This move is in line with the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which allows for the expansion of the academy into multiple campuses nationwide.
The funding will support priority infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and core training assets, and will be sourced from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) 2026 allocation. A high-level consultative meeting involving key stakeholders, including the Minister of Police Affairs, Minister of Education, and the Inspector-General of Police, considered factors such as student intake capacity, funding realities, and academic quality assurance before recommending Erinja as the site for the new campus.
President Tinubu believes the expansion will strengthen institutional governance, modern policing education, and national security. The new campus is expected to serve as a strategic hub for police training in the South-West geopolitical zone, reflecting the administration’s commitment to decentralized and specialized security education.
The Nigeria Police Academy, with its main campus in Wudil, Kano State, is a degree-awarding institution responsible for training officers of the Nigeria Police Force. The expansion aims to improve professionalism and operational capacity within the country’s internal security framework.
The decision to establish the new campus in Erinja was made after careful consideration of various factors, including the current expansion of the Nigeria Police Force recruitment and long-term national security requirements.
The ₦15 billion grant will be used to develop priority infrastructure, including academic facilities, student hostels, and essential training assets. This development is part of broader efforts by the Tinubu administration to reform and strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture through enhanced human capital development in key institutions.
