Suspected thugs attacked the popular Farm Centre GSM Market in Kano, injuring traders and looting property.
The incident occurred in broad daylight, with around 200 hoodlums storming the market, assaulting people, and stealing smartphones. The attackers were reportedly accompanying a Kano Central senatorial aspirant, Abdussalam Abubakar, also known as AA Zaura, to an event at a nearby hotel.
The market, a major hub for mobile phones and related services, provides employment to over 39,000 youths. Traders are demanding justice and calling for increased security measures to prevent future attacks. The Kano State Government has yet to release an official statement on the incident.
The attack has sparked concerns about insecurity in Kano, particularly in commercial areas. Traders are urging the government to take action against the perpetrators and ensure their safety. The incident has also raised questions about the role of politicians in fueling violence in the state.
According to eyewitnesses, police operatives responded to the situation but were outnumbered by the attackers. Some officers were reportedly injured, and the hoodlums were able to escape with stolen goods. The market chairman, Alhaji Jamilu Bala Gama, has condemned the attack and called for legal action against the perpetrators.
This is not the first time the market has been attacked. In June 2025, a fire outbreak destroyed over 300 shops, causing significant losses. The state government has promised to support affected traders and improve security measures.
The attack has disrupted business activities in the market, with many traders fleeing for safety. The economic impact of the incident is expected to be significant, given the market’s importance in the region.
The people of Kano are calling for increased security measures to protect traders and residents. The government must take action to address the rising tide of violence in the state.
