Shehu Sani, former Kaduna Central Senator, has officially thrown his hat into the ring for the 2027 Senate elections, obtaining the APC Expression of Interest and Nomination forms. This move marks his formal entry into the contest, signaling a potential return to the Senate.
Sani, a prominent rights activist and politician, previously represented Kaduna Central from 2015 to 2019. His decision to contest is expected to reshape the dynamics of the race, given his grassroots appeal and political experience. The APC has announced that primary elections will commence on May 15, 2026, with the House of Representatives, followed by Senate, State Assembly, governorship, and presidential primaries.
Sani’s return to the APC comes after a period of political realignment, having previously left the party due to conflicts with then-Governor Nasir El-Rufai. His recent reconciliation with Governor Uba Sani has likely paved the way for his return. Sani has expressed support for Uba Sani’s re-election bid, emphasizing the need for party unity and collective action.
The Kaduna Central Senatorial District is a pivotal battleground, with Sani facing stiff competition from other APC chieftains, including former Speaker Yusuf Ibrahim Zailani and Aminu Zaria. The PDP’s incumbent Senator, Usman Adamu, also poses a strong challenge, enjoying significant grassroots support.
Sani’s candidacy is seen as a strategic move to bolster the APC’s influence in Kaduna. His experience and national reputation for advocacy on civil rights issues make him a formidable contender. As the 2027 elections approach, Sani’s chances will depend on party dynamics, voter sentiment, and strategic alliances.
