APC former national chairman Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has carefully confirmed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as the leader of the party in Kano State, stressing that no figure can drive or dictate to him.
Speaking to newsmen in Hausa in Abuja on Monday, Ganduje said the tradition of the APC gives a sitting governor the prerogative power to spearhead, control and direct party leadership in his state.
“The governor is the leader. He makes decisions and enforces them. That is our tradition,” Ganduje stated.
Ganduje emphasized that Abba’s leadership of the APC in Kano is now settled, and the national secretariat respects the autonomy of the governor to run the party’s affairs without external interference from any stalwart.
Addressing questions on former deputy governor Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, Ganduje noted that Gawuna left the APC on his own and without anyone’s consent. He added that Gawuna has the right to decide his political future independently.
“Gawuna can decide to be on his own. We know that both of them lost the seat of governor in 2023, but that is politics. Today, Abba is governor and leader of our party in Kano,” Ganduje said.
The APC chairman acknowledged that he lacks the autonomy or power to decide for Gawuna or control him, especially given that they both previously served as governor and deputy governor. He said respect for each man’s political judgment must be maintained.
Under Abba’s leadership, party stakeholders in Kano say decision-making has been consultative and inclusive, reflecting the governor’s pledge to carry all blocs along while enforcing discipline where necessary.
With Ganduje’s public affirmation, the APC in Kano now operates under the able leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who is empowered by party tradition to make and enforce decisions as the state leader.
