Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday convicted former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, over a N33.7 billion money laundering case instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The court found the former minister guilty on all 12 counts filed against him by the anti-graft agency.
Delivering judgment, Justice Omotosho accused Mamman of attempting to frustrate and delay the judicial process, describing his absence in court during the judgment as an effort to arrest the proceedings.
The judge subsequently ordered that a warrant of arrest be issued against the former minister and directed that he be produced before the court for sentencing on May 13, 2026.
Justice Omotosho further described the actions of the former minister as shameful, noting that he occupied a position meant to improve the lives of Nigerians but allegedly enriched himself at the expense of the citizens.
According to the judge, Nigeria’s lingering electricity challenges were worsened by the activities of the defendant and others allegedly involved in the fraud through the use of proxy companies.
The court also commended the detailed investigation carried out in the matter before convicting the former minister on all charges brought against him by the prosecution.
The EFCC had accused Mamman of laundering billions of naira during his tenure as Minister of Power under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari
