Mukwa, a rural town in Niger State, is bracing for another flood disaster, reminiscent of last year’s devastating event that claimed hundreds of lives and left thousands displaced. The water level is rising, and residents are anxious about the impending doom.
Last year’s flood, which occurred in May 2025, was one of the worst in Nigeria’s recent history, killing over 500 people and affecting thousands more. The disaster was exacerbated by the collapse of a nearby dam, which overwhelmed local infrastructure. ¹ ²
The people of Mukwa are still recovering from the trauma of last year’s flood, and the news of another impending disaster has sent shockwaves through the community. Many are wondering if the authorities have taken adequate measures to prevent a repeat of last year’s tragedy.
According to reports, the contract for flood mitigation works has been awarded, and the contractor has collected payment. However, the development of the work is unclear, leaving residents skeptical about the government’s commitment to preventing the disaster.
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has predicted that 30,707 communities are at risk of flooding in 2026, with Niger State being one of the high-risk areas. The agency has called for urgent action to mitigate the impact of flooding. ³ ⁴
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has also warned of the dangers of flooding and urged residents to take necessary precautions. However, many are questioning the effectiveness of these warnings, given the recurring nature of floods in Mukwa.
Last year’s flood destroyed homes, farms, and infrastructure, leaving thousands without access to basic necessities like food, water, and shelter. The economic impact was also significant, with estimated losses running into billions of naira.
As the water level continues to rise, the people of Mukwa are left to wonder if they will be spared from another disaster. Will the authorities act in time to prevent a repeat of last year’s tragedy, or will Mukwa be left to face the wrath of the floodwaters once again?
