Aminu Gwarzo, former Deputy Governor of Kano State, has emerged as the preferred candidate of Rabiu Kwankwaso for the Kano State governorship election under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Although, Gawuna who represents the North Central Senatorial Seat, but, Kwankwaso was said to have decided for ex- deputy who also alleged gained Kwankwaso’s trust due to his loyalty and longstanding alignment with the Kwankwasiyya ideology.
The decision follows intense deliberations between Kwankwaso and other contenders, including former APC and ADC candidates Nasiru Gwamna. The NDC held an 18-hour meeting to decide on the governorship candidate, with Gwarzo emerging as the consensus choice.
Gwarzo’s selection is seen as a strategic move, but although Gawuna could have been suitable considering if given his strong grassroots appeal in Kano Central, which is considered the electoral heartbeat of the state.
However, some critics argue that Kwankwaso’s decision is selfish, prioritizing personal interests over the party’s greater good.
Gwarzo’s emergence has been welcomed by some, who praise his leadership skills and vision for the state.
The former deputy governor had previously joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in April 2026 but resigned just a month later alongside his mentor Rabi’u a figure in kwankwassiyya movement, citing patriotic considerations and a desire to pursue a political path aligned with his vision for good governance.
Gwarzo’s selection is expected to shape the political landscape in Kano State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The NDC has officially announce Gwarzo’s candidacy, but insiders say the announcement is imminent.
