Bandits have attacked Dangulbi community in Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State, killing 17 people, including seven visitors who were there for the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations. The attackers, who were on motorcycles, also looted shops and abducted several residents.
The incident has raised concerns about the worsening security situation in the area, especially with the rainy season approaching. This attack is part of a series of deadly raids in the region, with recent incidents including the killing of a village head and the abduction of 40 civilians in another community.
According to eyewitnesses, the bandits arrived in the community around 8pm, shooting sporadically and setting fire to houses. The attackers made away with livestock, food, and other valuables.
The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed the incidents and assured that security operatives are working to restore normalcy and contain the situation. “We are aware of the attack and are taking necessary measures to apprehend the perpetrators,” a police spokesperson said.
The attack has left the community in fear and panic, with many residents fleeing their homes. The local government chairman has visited the affected community, promising support and assistance to the victims.
The incident highlights the ongoing struggle with banditry in Sokoto State, with communities living in constant fear of attacks. The government has been urged to take concrete steps to address the security situation and protect citizens.
The attack comes just days after the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, which were meant to be a time of peace and joy. Instead, the community is now mourning the loss of loved ones.
The impact of these attacks on the local community is significant, with many families displaced and livelihoods destroyed. There are calls for increased security measures to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of residents.
