The Kano State Government has announced an ambitious social welfare programme to conduct a mass marriage ceremony for 3,000 vulnerable residents. The initiative is designed to support widows, orphans, and young people from low-income households, and to ease economic pressures while promoting social stability.
Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, the Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, disclosed the programme in an official update on his social media platforms. He stated that the initiative will bring together 1,500 men and 1,500 women, providing them with financial and material support to establish stable family units despite current economic challenges.
The state government has assembled a comprehensive start-up and household support package for the couples. Each couple will receive essential household items, including bed frames, mattresses, pillows, and matching bed sheets, as well as wardrobes for storage.
The couples will also receive food supplies, including bags of rice, pasta, and cooking oil. Additionally, the government will provide wedding attire for the couples, with brides receiving Ankara fabrics and hijabs, and grooms receiving traditional outfits and caps.
The Kano State Government will also pay the mandatory dowry of N100,000 for each bride. To help prevent financial hardship after marriage, each couple will receive an additional N100,000 grant to start a small business or invest in other income-generating ventures.
Sheikh Daurawa emphasized that the selection process will adhere to strict health and administrative requirements. Before the marriages are formally conducted, all prospective brides and grooms will be required to undergo medical screening and complete all necessary documentation.
The initiative is expected to be among the largest government-sponsored mass marriage programmes in Kano’s history, reflecting the state’s continued use of social welfare interventions to address grassroots socioeconomic challenges.
The programme has been welcomed by many, who see it as a positive step towards promoting social stability and supporting vulnerable members of society. The state government is expected to announce further details about the programme in the coming days.
The mass wedding ceremony is scheduled to take place soon, and it is expected to be a grand affair, with many dignitaries and well-wishers in attendance.
