…Oshiomhole described Kyari as bunch of criminals and thieves.

The Nigerian Senate has distanced itself from the arrest warrant issued against Mele Kyari, former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, by its Committee on Public Accounts. The committee had ordered Kyari’s arrest over alleged unaccounted funds of ₦210 trillion between 2017 and 2023
The Senate also disassociated itself from comments made by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who described the NNPC as a “bunch of criminals and thieves” during a committee hearing. The upper legislative chamber emphasized that Oshiomhole’s remarks did not reflect the Senate’s position ².
Kyari’s lawyer had argued that his client was abroad for medical treatment and couldn’t appear before the committee. The Senate committee had previously summoned Kyari to explain the alleged discrepancies in NNPC’s financial records ³.
Former NNPC CFO Umar Ajiya dismissed the ₦210 trillion figure as misleading, stating that the company’s total revenue during the period was approximately ₦54.5 trillion. Ajiya urged the committee to verify the claims with relevant agencies ¹.
The investigation is ongoing, with the committee directing other NNPC officials to reappear before it in two weeks.
