….Sets Up 7-Man Panel to Probe Kano’s Town Planning Violations”

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the immediate suspension of the Managing Director and the Director of the Kano Urban Planning and Development Authority, KNUPDA. The action comes amid rising public complaints over illegal structures, land grabbing, and disregard for building approvals across the state.
The governor also inaugurated a high-powered seven-member committee to investigate persistent violations of town planning regulations. The panel’s mandate is to look into poorly regulated developments, unauthorized conversions of public spaces, and the general breakdown in enforcement by KNUPDA.
In recent years, Kano has seen a surge in buildings blocking drainage, structures on road setbacks, and commercial developments in residential areas. Residents and urban planners warned that unchecked expansion was worsening flooding, traffic congestion, and safety risks. The suspension signals the government’s move from warnings to action.
According to Government House sources, the 7-man committee will audit approvals issued by KNUPDA in the last 3 years, identify officials who enabled violations, and recommend disciplinary actions. They are also tasked with proposing reforms to stop “waivers for the powerful” while ordinary citizens face demolition.
The move has been welcomed by many Kano residents who say the city’s master plan has been abused for too long. Developers and property owners, however, are watching closely to see if the probe will be fair and not politically targeted. Civil society groups are calling for the committee’s report to be made public.
Gov Abba Kabir Yusuf has repeatedly said his administration will not allow “Kano to be turned into a jungle of concrete without order.” By suspending the top KNUPDA officials and setting up an independent probe, he is putting the agency under scrutiny and warning that violations will attract consequences, regardless of status.
The suspended MD and Director will step aside while the committee investigates. The panel is expected to submit its findings and recommendations within a set timeline. Depending on the outcome, more staff changes, demolitions, and policy reforms could follow as the state tries to restore order to its urban plan.
