A heated drama unfolded in Ile-Ife, Osun State, during the 10th coronation anniversary of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, where Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was installed as Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodua. Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State was delivering a speech when he suddenly broke into a song, prompting the First Lady to intervene.
Senator Tinubu walked up to the podium and told Governor Adeleke, “I’ll give you five minutes to finish your speech. The music is enough,” threatening to switch off the microphone if he continued singing. The incident sparked widespread reactions online, with some viewing it as a breach of protocol and others seeing it as a display of power.
The First Lady’s actions were seen as a bold move, with some praising her for standing up to the governor. Others, however, criticized her for being disrespectful to the governor and the occasion.
Hours later, Governor Adeleke’s wife, Titilola, took to social media to address Senator Tinubu, congratulating her on her new title and referring to her as “Mummy”. Titilola’s message read, “I profoundly rejoice with the Mother of the Nation, Distinguished Senator (Dr) Oluremi Tinubu (CON), on her historic installation as the Yeye Oodua of Yoruba Land.”
Titilola’s response was seen as a show of support for her husband and a rebuke of the First Lady’s behavior. The incident has generated mixed reactions, with some defending Senator Tinubu’s actions as a necessary intervention and others criticizing it as disrespectful to the governor.
The drama has sparked a heated debate on social media, with many Nigerians weighing in on the incident. While some have praised the First Lady for her boldness, others have criticized her for being too assertive.
The incident has also raised questions about the relationship between the First Lady and Governor Adeleke, with many wondering if there is a deeper rift between the two. Only time will tell how this drama will play out.
