A senior consultant physician, Dr. Ibrahim, collapsed and died Saturday evening at Arewa Surgery Hospital, Hotoro, Kano, barely 15 minutes after arriving to see patients who had waited hours for his clinic.
According to an account shared by Suleiman Harbo, an aide to the Jigawa State Governor, Dr. Ibrahim had come in to replace another consultant who was unavailable. Harbo said he had taken his elderly mother to the hospital around 5 p.m., and after a long wait with about six patients, most over 80 years old, staff called Dr. Ibrahim. He said he would come after Maghrib prayer.
Harbo said the doctor arrived shortly after, became dizzy immediately after stepping out of his vehicle, and was rushed to the emergency unit by fellow medics. “Within 15 minutes, he was confirmed dead,” Harbo wrote.
“The painful irony was this: all the patients waiting to see him were above 80 years of age, while about five senior consultant doctors fought to save him, yet all of them broke down in tears,” he said.
Those present said Dr. Ibrahim’s last audible words were, “La ilaha illallah.” When Harbo’s mother was told the doctor they were waiting for had just died, she said, “Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un… May Allah have mercy on him. Let us just go home. I am already healed.” The cause of death was not immediately known.
