Former Kano State Governor and Sarkin Malaman Kontagora, retired Col. Sani Bello, has criticized the Nigerian government’s handling of insecurity, saying authorities are quicker to track individuals who insult governors than armed bandits terrorizing communities.
Bello expressed concern that despite the military’s superior firepower, bandits continue to operate openly, releasing videos and threats without facing decisive action.
Bello alleged that the government has reasons for not eliminating the armed groups outright, questioning why bandits can use mobile phones and social media without being tracked.
He emphasized that the military has the capacity to neutralize the bandits, citing the availability of aerial drones, artillery guns, and combat aircraft.
The former governor called for stronger and more decisive action against armed groups, stressing that Nigerians expect security agencies to deploy the same level of efficiency used in tracking other offenders to those responsible for violent attacks.
He suggested integrating police officers into military operations and recalling retired soldiers to strengthen national security.
Bello’s remarks come as security agencies continue efforts to combat banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes affecting several parts of northern Nigeria.
The Nigerian Army has reported successes in disrupting bandit movements and neutralizing terrorists in Niger and Kaduna states .
In a related development, the Nigerian military has launched operations to tackle banditry and insurgency in the North-West region. The Army has also urged citizens to provide intelligence to support the efforts.
Bello’s criticism highlights the ongoing debate about the government’s approach to insecurity in Nigeria. Some argue that the government should adopt a more aggressive approach, while others advocate for dialogue and non-kinetic solutions.
The situation remains fluid, with bandits continuing to carry out attacks and kidnappings in various parts of the country. The government has assured citizens that it is committed to addressing the security challenges.
