Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State General Sani Abacha, has slammed Nigeria’s leaders, saying the country’s situation is dire and the northern region is “totally hopeless”.
Speaking at the 3rd Late General Hassan Usman Katsina Memorial Conference in Kaduna, Al-Mustapha accused leaders of abandoning the founding fathers’ ideals and prioritizing personal gain. “Every child in the streets to elites knows the state of Nigeria is in a sorry state,” he said.
Al-Mustapha expressed disappointment with northern governors, who skipped the lecture, saying they lack thinking, sacrifice, and strategy. “From the theme — From Sacrifice To Strategy — this alone ought to make all governors in the North be here,” he lamented.
The retired major warned that speaking the truth might get him arrested, but he would not be silenced. “I wish I may be arrested here because I’ll speak truth,” he declared.
Al-Mustapha criticized leaders for their lack of vision and accountability, saying the system is rotten and they don’t care about the future. “Those in leadership positions don’t even understand what leadership is all about,” he added.
He urged Nigerians to demand better from their leaders, saying the current state of affairs is unacceptable. Al-Mustapha’s speech has sparked intense reactions, with many praising his bravery.
The conference theme highlights the need for leaders to shift from sacrifice to strategy, but Al-Mustapha questioned whether Nigeria’s leaders are capable of such a shift.
