A section of the Gombe State House of Assembly Complex under construction collapsed, resulting in one fatality and seven injuries. The incident occurred on Friday, July 10, 2026, at the construction site, prompting the state government to launch an investigation.
The Deputy Governor, Dr. Manassah Daniel Jatau, assured residents that the incident would be thoroughly investigated to determine its causes. The government has ordered a comprehensive integrity test and technical investigation into the collapse.
The contract for the Assembly Complex was awarded to BMC Multi Concept in 2024, with a completion date set for January 2027. The collapse affected only the canopy of the structure, not the main building.
Eight workers were involved in the incident, with seven sustaining injuries and one fatality. The injured workers received medical treatment at the Gombe State Specialist Hospital and the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.
Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and directed that all injured workers receive comprehensive medical care at the government’s expense.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works, Housing and Transportation, Danladi Adamu, stated that the government would take appropriate measures based on the investigation’s outcome and applicable safety and engineering standards.
The opposition party, PDP, has demanded an independent investigation into the collapse, citing possible violations of engineering standards, procurement procedures, and workplace safety regulations.
A member of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Hon. Mustapha Usman Hassan, called for a comprehensive and independent investigation, emphasizing the need for accountability and transparency.
The government has directed the contractor and project consultant to submit a formal incident report within 24 hours, followed by a preliminary investigation report and a comprehensive technical report.
The incident has raised concerns about compliance with engineering standards and workplace safety protocols in public infrastructure projects.
