A young man, Iliya Shago, was brutally killed in Kaduna State just hours before he was scheduled to move in with his newly married bride. The attack occurred on a road linking Soba and Ikara Local Government Areas, cutting short what was meant to be the start of a new chapter in his life.
According to an investigation by Rariya, Shago lived in Makwaran Lemu area of Soba LGA. He was already married with one wife and two children. Despite this, he had sought the hand of a divorcee in the Barau neighborhood of Ikara LGA, and after discussions between both families, the marriage was solemnized.
The couple had reportedly reached a mutual understanding, and Shago was making final preparations to bring his new wife home. It was during this period that the incident happened. He was traveling with a friend when they were intercepted on the road by a group of armed thugs.
The attackers first assaulted Shago’s friend, leaving him injured. Eyewitness accounts say the assailants then paused and were heard saying, “No, it’s not him, it’s the other one!” Immediately after, they turned their attention to Shago and attacked him with machetes until he died at the scene.
Rumors have since circulated in the area linking the killing to the bride’s former husband. Sources claim the ex-husband had repeatedly warned Shago to stay away from his ex-wife, alleging that he was planning to reconcile with her. Authorities have not confirmed whether this is connected to the murder.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kaduna State Police Command has not released an official statement on the incident. It remains unclear if any arrests have been made or if investigations have identified the attackers.
Residents in both Soba and Ikara LGAs expressed shock over the killing. Many described Shago as a family man who was simply trying to settle down again. The death has heightened tension in the communities, with calls for security agencies to intervene quickly.
The case has also reignited discussions about security on rural roads in Kaduna and about handling disputes related to marriage and divorce. Community leaders are urging calm while waiting for police to carry out a thorough investigation and bring those responsible to justice.
