Gunmen attacked Tsamaye village in Sokoto State’s Sabon Birni Local Government Area, killing at least 21 people and abducting 37 others. The attackers struck at night, opening fire indiscriminately and forcing residents to flee. Some victims were shot, while others drowned in a nearby river as they tried to escape. Two boats capsized due to panic, leading to the drowning of at least 18 people.
The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Sokoto State, with frequent attacks by armed bandits targeting villages and communities. The state has been grappling with banditry, kidnapping, and cattle rustling, with security agencies struggling to contain the situation.
The Commissioner of Police, Sokoto State Command, CP Hayatu Usman, has acknowledged the security challenges and identified logistics constraints, manpower shortages, and evolving tactics of criminal groups as major hurdles.
